Since 2003, Derek Scott has helped mission-driven brands find language that actually moves people to act.
For 16 years at Dunham+Company, he worked downstream of brand strategy: creative directing, writing, and editing the fundraising and marketing copy those strategies had to survive. He ended as Chief Creative Officer. Then at Stripes, he moved upstream and started writing the strategies themselves. Across both, he was exposed to dozens of brand strategies built by some of the best minds in the industry.
That vantage point taught Derek something most strategists never learn: the strongest strategies aren’t the ones that look best in a deck. They’re the ones that survive contact with a fundraising appeal, a major donor proposal, or a website headline. The ones that give a copywriter something to work with, not something to decode.
That gap between the strategy in the deck and copy in the real world is where Derek learned to work. Most strategists can’t write the copy. Most copywriters can’t think the strategy. He does both, because he had to.
Derek founded Creator in 2021 to write copy directly.
As much as he loved it, clients kept asking for the work that comes before the copy. The strategy. The positioning. The framing that makes the copy smarter and work harder. The pattern became impossible to ignore.
That’s when Creator went upstream.
Today, Creator does brand strategy work first, grounded in two decades of learning what actually moves people.
This isn’t just work Derek is good at. It’s work he was created to do.
That conviction comes from faith as much as from craft. Derek believes the people behind mission-driven work have been called to it. And he believes he’s been called to help them move the audiences they’re meant to reach, and move them to respond.
